Building Permits

The City of Paynesville requires building permits for nearly all construction. This includes new homes, remodeling, garages, additions, decks, sheds, shingling, siding, replacing windows, doors, mechanical and other miscellaneous projects.  In addition, a Building Permit is required for any building being moved into or out of the city and for any building being demolished. If you are unsure if you need a permit, have any questions or need to schedule an appointment, please call the Brad Mehlhop, Building Official at (320) 243-3714 extension 226.

Building Permit applications can be obtained at the City Hall during normal business hours (8:30-4:30, Mon.-Fri.) or from the Forms page. Most permit applications are generally processed within 7-10 days. Permits must be picked up and paid for before the project is started.

Applications for remodeling, additions, or new construction require two drawings of the project and diagram with set backs from property lines clearly marked on it. Please contact City Hall if you are unsure of the City's Zoning Ordinance setback requirements.  The fee for the permit is based on the value of materials and labor, and is calculated by the City's Building Inspector.

Electrical permits are pulled through the electrician you may be working with or directly through the state electrical inspector. Paynesville’s electrical inspector is Jason Klimek (320) 834-5183.

All building contractors doing work within the city limits are required to show annual proof of their Minnesota contractor's license before a permit will be issued. A fax or photocopy of the Contractor's License is acceptable.
